Both scholarships and grants for college are free money to help you pay for your education. Unlike student loans, you don't have to pay back college grants or scholarships, except under certain circumstances, like withdrawing early from a program or a change in your enrollment status.footnote 1

The biggest difference between college grants and scholarships is that grants for college are typically need-based. Scholarships may be need-based or merit-based, which means they're given out based on some kind of ability, hobby, ethnicity, religion, etc.

Generally, your school will pay out your grant money in at least two payments called disbursements. Typically, the college applies your grant money toward your tuition, fees, and (if you live on campus) room and board. Any money left over is paid to you for other expenses.footnote 2

There are college grants available to international students. Grant programs and financial aid for international students are not as abundant as those for domestic students. However, there is still a variety of grants for college dedicated specifically to supporting international students.

All students attending a college or career training program should ask about other grant opportunities. Your school may have its own grants to offer. College-specific grant eligibility is based on factors that differ from school to school, depending on the kinds of students the school wants to attract and the amount of money they have to give away.

The Federal Work-Study Program (FWS) provides part time employment for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay their education expenses. The program encourages community service work and work related on campus jobs related to the student's course of study. The FAFSA is part of the application process and jobs are provided to help the neediest students finance some of the costs of their education.

Colleges provide institutional grants and scholarships to help make up the difference between college costs and what a family can be expected to contribute through income, savings, loans, and student earnings. Awards may be based on academic merit, artistic or athletic talent, financial need or other factors. You can learn more about the types of institutional grants and scholarships awarded by checking each college's financial aid website.

Private scholarships provide funding for students who meet the requirements specified by the donor organization. Local organizations or businesses may offer scholarships to students who plan to study at a regional college or who plan to pursue a degree in a particular field of study.

The New York State Young Farmers Loan Forgiveness Incentive Program is offered to encourage recent college graduates to pursue careers in farming in New York State. This program provides loan forgiveness awards to individuals who obtain an undergraduate degree from an approved New York State college or university and agree to operate a farm in New York State, on a full- time basis, for five years.

The Get on Your Feet Loan Forgiveness Program allows students who graduate from a college or university located in NYS in 2014-15 or thereafter, continue to live in NYS upon college graduation, earn less than $50,000 per year, participate in either the federal Pay As You Earn (PAYE) or eligible Income Based Repayment (IBR) program, and apply within two years of graduating from college to be eligible to have their federal income-based repayment plan commitment covered for two years.

After exhausting all opportunities for scholarships and grants, you may consider student loans. You may apply for a federal student loan by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If after exhausting your federal student loan options you find that you still have a college funding gap, you may consider a private loan to make up the difference.

The financial aid offer from your college shows the federal student loans for which you are eligible. Loan fees are charged for each loan. The fee varies by type of loan. Interest rates and borrowing limits for federal student loans are determined by the U.S. Department of Education.

If a private student loan is needed, student borrowers will secure better terms and pricing by adding a credit worthy co-signer to their application. Always check the interest rate, fees, interest capitalization policy, repayment period, prepayment penalties and other terms and conditions of the loan before you sign a promissory note.

The Excelsior Scholarship, in combination with other student financial aid programs, allows students to attend a SUNY or CUNY college tuition-free. The program covers tuition for eligible SUNY and CUNY students. For the 2022-23 academic year, families who earned $125,000 or less in the tax year 2020 are eligible to apply.

To determine the award amount, the tuition rate* charged is first reduced by the total dollar amount awarded from other student financial aid awards for the academic year, including a NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) award and/or federal Pell grant. The Excelsior Scholarship covers any remaining tuition expenses up to $5,500. In instances where tuition expenses exceed the total financial aid a recipient is awarded, a tuition credit will be applied to the remaining balance.

To be eligible for an Excelsior Scholarship, students with qualified disabilities under the Americans With Disabilities Act who attend less than full time must register with their college office for students with disabilities.

To determine the award amount, the 2016-17 resident tuition rate charged by SUNY ($6,470) or CUNY ($6,330) will be reduced by the amount of certain other student financial aid awards which an applicant has or will receive for the academic year, including a NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) award and/or federal Pell grant. The Excelsior Scholarship will cover any remaining tuition liability up to $5,500; and a tuition credit will cover any remaining tuition expenses not covered by the Excelsior Scholarship.

To receive award payments after the initial application year, an Excelsior Scholarship recipient who qualifies under the DREAM Act must annually complete a payment application. Recipients under the DREAM Act who are eligible for federal student aid must also complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year.
