A fox squirrel belongs to the eastern United States, except for New England. They have seven subspecies, two of which occur in North Carolina. However, the fox squirrel is the giant tree squirrel in North Carolina, nearly double the size of the gray squirrel.

There are two categories of flying squirrels; northern flying squirrel and southern flying squirrel. Both are gray-brown, but the northern flying squirrel has belly fur that is gray at the base, and for the south of flying squirrel, the belly fur is all white.

A baby flying squirrel can be purchased from breeders at the average cost of $450 to $600. However, it is essential to buy them at 6 to 8 weeks of age to make sure you can bond to them.

In most of the states of the USA, it is legal to have a baby squirrel as a pet. However, if someone wants to pet a wild squirrel, they must ask the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.

Exciting news! On March 28, 2023, all Captive Wildlife applications will move to an online application system (Go Outdoors Florida). For more details, please read the full memo or visit our FAQs page.

5. Animal Protein. Live or dried mealworms, crickets, or live moths (2 per day). Another option is eggs (hard-boiled or scrambled, with the shell), cheese, or plain yogurt mashed with some fruit (1 tsp. per day). Mealworms are available live or canned from pet stores and online at -Department.htm

Natural sunlight. 1 hour per day in an outdoor cage or screened porch during the warm months provides Vit D and will help keep your squirrel healthy. An open window screened with aluminum screening or hardware cloth is another option. Indoors, a full-spectrum light (FSL) for 8 hrs per day is the next-best thing; although it does not provide Vit D, it is believed to have other health benefits.

Suppose you are thinking of getting a squirrel as a pet. In that case, you should contact a local government official to ask about the specifics, with information about the circumstances in which you are thinking of acquiring one (or have acquired one, if you have picked up an injured squirrel).

You may need a permit for certain types of squirrels and in some situations. It is best to consult legal authorities on the specifics of your situation and the type of squirrel that you wish to keep, as there are several squirrel species in Utah, and the laws may differ according to the circumstances and species.

The flying squirrel is a nocturnal, small squirrel that is commonly found in forests. They can use flaps of skin between their forelimbs and hind limbs to glide between trees (not quite fly, but still impressive). They can glide distances up to 25 meters in the right conditions!

There is also the American red squirrel, which is another small squirrel, at only 14 inches in length. These cute little things can live up to 8 years but have many natural predators. They are mainly found in coniferous forests but can live in deciduous forests and mostly eat seeds.

If you want to obtain a pet squirrel legally, you will need to get in touch with your local government and find out the legalities in your specific area. If you are given the go-ahead, make sure you have written permission before getting a squirrel.

Even if you find an injured squirrel, you should look into the laws regarding its treatment and whether you can keep it; in some states, it is illegal to have a squirrel even temporarily while providing care.

No, there do not seem to be breeders that specialize in providing pet squirrels in the state. This may be because of the vagueness of the regulation, which might make it hard for breeders to handle and sell squirrels legally.

The leaf design on the Perky Pet Squirrel-Be-Gone bird feeder is both beautiful and functional! The leafy embellishments dress this feeder in a lovely exterior as birds enjoy their seed. But when a squirrel tries to snitch a snack, the critter's weight pulls the leaf adorned frame over the feeding ports keeping paws out. This squirrel-proof bird feeder holds sunflower seeds and any bird seed mix so you can attract a variety of backyard birds.

More serious than cosmetic damage to furniture and mess is the danger squirrels and their constantly-growing incisor teeth, which must be continuously worn down by chewing, pose to electric wiring. In the wild, squirrels will gnaw nuts and bark to keep their teeth in check, but captive individuals will often turn their attentions to electric cabling and can easily chew through thick three-core wiring serving heavy duty appliances such as cookers and fires. In Paling's words:

Mull gave the critters to his niece, Barbara, who unsuccessfully tried to breed them. In 1951 she married and left home. Eventually, one of the white squirrels escaped and Mr. Mull soon let the other one go. Before long, the squirrels began breeding in the wild and appeared in several areas of town.

In addition to Brevard, white squirrels have been spotted in Olney, IL; Versailles, IL; Hodgenville, KY; Marionville, MO; Trenton, NJ; Bloomfield, NY; Greenwood, SC; and Kenton, TN. But only Brevard holds an annual festival in their honor!!

The Squirrel Forum is the worlds largest squirrel emergency, baby squirrel care, and general squirrel information website. There are links to partner boards like the awesome Squirrel Board with top rehabbers, wildlife professionals, vets, vet techs, and our own Squirrel Forum geared toward captive (pet) squirrel holders. A forum (same as a board) is a site where one can post questions or opinions and get responses from a like minded community on a specific subject. Navigate through our pages by clicking the links on the navigation bar at the top of this page (under menu on smart phones). All diet and medical information is based on accepted practices within the squirrel rehab and veterinary community.

We do not advocate keeping captive releasable squirrels or violating state laws. With that said we realize some people do responsibly keep non-releasable squirrels. The Squirrel Forum is a safe space where you can discuss all aspects of properly keeping a squirrel. People come to the forum looking for answers and our expert moderators, rehabbers and vet members provide them without bias. You will not find cliques on this forum and everyone has equal access and respect. This forum is run in a professional, factual, friendly manner and is welcoming to newcomers seeking help and answers.

Most State Fish and Wildlife agencies mandate euthanasia of non-releasables. In the real world this is not always observed and some squirrels that have the ability to recover with disability and live a pain free existence are diverted to homes with qualified experienced individuals. Our members and partner board members have squirrels that are dwarfs, may be paralyzed, neurologically impaired, have severe dental issues and other problems that prevent release. Some squirrels are too friendly and imprinted after years of living in a home. These squirrels are bonded, well cared for and are loved family members. Our only goal is seeing that such special needs squirrels get the best possible care, not encouraging people to keep pet squirrels.

Playful and very inquisitive, the red squirrel family can be seen happily exploring their enclosure much to the delight of the park visitors. Mum Mindy is known to be a little more outgoing than Dad Mork, and can often be seen taking a spin on her exercise wheel which makes for a visual treat, as red squirrels are notably very elusive and hard to spot in the wild.

Slightly smaller than greys, red squirrels are loved for their bright red coat, long bushy tails and red ear tufts. Red squirrels are our native species and current populations are estimated at 140,000 compared to the more familiar grey squirrel, introduced from North America in the 1800s, with an estimated population of 2.5 million. 041b061a72
